Contributions to Community Projects

Contributions to locally-conceived projects that will benefit the whole community. These are usually subsidised on a $1 for $1 basis but the subsidy rate can vary up to $3 for $1 where vital water supply, medical support and airstrip works are involved. Usually, but not always, the projects are identified by the communities. The Trust now encourages and assists with the preparation of community plans and these plans provide the catalyst for many of the projects undertaken.

Since its inception, the Trust have provided in excess of $6 million worth of funding for community projects.

Annual Operating Grants

Annual operating grants are made to assist communities with administration and other recurrent costs. The level of grant is based on community numbers and the Trust's assessment of the degree of involvement of each organisation in community facilities services and activities. As a matter of policy, grants are only made to those community organisations that provide the Trust with audited financial statements.

Other Funding Arrangements

In some circumstances loans are made to communities usually as 'bridging finance' for major capital works with the principal repayments becoming part of the local contribution. These loans are usually made for periods of three years or less with interest charged at current Treasury interest rates.

Radio and television services (including the ABC, Imparja, Southern Cross Seven and SBS) are provided to the Trust's area via satellite. The Trust assists some communities receive these services through subsidies on the costs of local rebroadcasting systems.

The subsidies apply to maintenance agreements with the main service supplier Australian Satellite Services Pty Ltd. under agreements which allow some communities to reduce the costs to them by lessening the number of service calls. Subsidy arrangements are in place at Lyndhurst, Oodnadatta, Yunta, Mintabie, Andamooka, Marree, Glendambo, Marla, Penong, Fowlers Bay, Copley and William Creek.
