History
Yunta had its origins in the 1880s as a watering point on an early designated stock route from the New South Wales border at Cockburn, via the Mingary Reservoir, Mannahill and Yunta to the original railhead at Terowie. It was surveyed as a railway service town when the Peterborough to Cockburn rail link was constructed between 1885 and 1887 along the line of the old stock route.
Situated 90 km north east of Peterborough, Yunta today sits on both the Barrier Highway to Broken Hill and the Indian-Pacific railway line at the point where the eastern access road to the north Flinders Ranges and Arkaroola leaves the highway. With a population of about 70, Yunta is a service centre for tourists and travellers and a meeting and supply focus for about 25 families living on the surrounding pastoral sheep runs.
Special attractions
Yunta is a progressive and cohesive community and has been successful in the SA Tidy Towns competition on a number of occasions. Its 26-student rural school is a focal point and it has a well-appointed Telecentre and information bay on former railway property.
In 2003 Yunta successfully attracted Commonwealth funding for a new Rural Transaction Centre that will house the Telecentre and free-up that building for use as visiting professional consulting rooms and as a medical clinic for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
For many years Yunta has hosted a well-patronised Easter Tennis Tournament and there is an annual picnic race meeting.
Tourist services
There are two seven-day service stations, a police presence, an ambulance service and centre, a hotel with accommodation, a swimming pool, a post office, an airstrip and public toilets.
