History
Pimba is strategically situated on the Stuart Highway and the Ghan/Indian-Pacific railway line at the junction with the sealed road north to Woomera and Roxby Downs. It is 175 km north of Port Augusta.
It was established originally as a workers’ camp during the construction of the transcontinental railway to Western Australia at the end of the First World War and retained as a railway siding once the track became operational. The township was not formally surveyed until the early 1960s.
The township is totally surrounded by Arcoona Station, which until its recent sale was the only S Kidman and Co holding in South Australia that ran sheep.
There is a stock and freight trucking business located at Pimba making the most of its access and location in relation to the Stuart Highway, Port Augusta, Woomera, Roxby Downs and the west and north west pastoral districts.
Tourist services
There is a seven-day roadhouse at Pimba (the legendary Spud’s Roadhouse) with accommodation and all other services now being effectively provided from Woomera which is only six kilometres away.
