Communities - Penong

History

Established in the late 19th century near the site of the old Penong homestead, the township of Penong is 75 km west of Ceduna on the Eyre Highway. It is a mixed farming and cropping area with a district population of about 170 which includes 75 in the township itself.

It is one of only two communities in the State’s out-of-councils area that has coastal frontage and this frontage includes Point Sinclair and Cactus Beach.

The town water supplies at Penong that supplement roof catchment are derived from the adjacent Anjutabie water basin by an array of operational windmills situated near the main entrance to the town.

Special attractions

Cactus Beach, with its famous right-hand and left-hand wave breaks, is only 25 km from Penong. Adjacent the beach is the Point Sinclair Conservation Reserve and there are excellent fishing spots in the bay off the Point Sinclair jetty.

The old Penong Woolshed museum offers locally crafted artwork and produce and gourmet foods made locally include quandong jam and chutney. The old Town Hall has been converted into a surfboard factory and Penong has an excellent sporting complex – and its own football team, the Western United Tigers.

Tourist services

There is a hotel in the town and a 24-hour roadhouse on the Eyre Highway. The roadhouse now includes provision for public access to the Internet.
