History
Fowlers Bay was recognised by the Outback Areas Community Development Trust for assistance purposes only in 2002. Prior to that the coastal holiday township was part of the Coorabie and Districts Progress Association. Fowlers Bay, 145 km west of Ceduna, is one of only two remote, unincorporated districts in SA with coastal frontage and an aquaculture industry.
It was from Fowlers Bay in the late 19th century that wool, surplus livestock and some grain from the then extensive Fowlers Bay and Yalata pastoral runs was shipped. Today the township is a coastal holiday destination, an attraction that sees its permanent population of about 40 swell to a few times that number in the summer months.
Special attractions
Spectacular sand dunes that have already engulfed the old, original hotel encroach on the township from the west. There is a pristine bay, a jetty and good fishing. Much of the domestic water for the township that is not caught from roof runoff is supplied from shallow wells sunk at the foot of the sand hills.
Tourist services
There is cabin accommodation and good camping facilities while fuel and supplies are available every day. Fowlers Bay residents rely on personal electricity generation but a proposal is now being investigated to extend a power line to the township from Nundroo to the north.
