History
Established in the 1860s around the State’s third working copper mine after Kapunda and Burra, Blinman had a population of 1500 people in 1869. Sitting as it does on the central spine of the Flinders Ranges, the township of North Blinman has the little-known distinction of being the most elevated surveyed government town in South Australia.
Although with a much reduced population the townships of Blinman North and South have retained their identity and have for some time served as a tourist centre for the Flinders Ranges with good road access from either side of the Ranges and from Wilpena to the south. The current residential population is about 25 but this swells considerably during the winter tourist season.
Special attractions
Blinman provides easy access to the Parachilna Gorge to the west and to the Yunta-Balcanoona-Arkaroola road to the east. The old mine and its associated works are of interest and the mine is currently being redeveloped as a quality tourist product. Blinman has some very historic burials at its cemetery and there is a memorial there to William Keckwick , second-in-command on three of John McDouall Stuart’s expeditions.
Tourist services
There is accommodation available at and through the North Blinman Hotel and there are at least two bed and breakfast hire cottages available. The Angorichna hostel and tourist centre is within easy reach of the town and stations like Gum Creek and Oratunga cater for tourists.
